Saturday, the St. Edward Eagles (5-1) will face off against the St. Ignatius Wildcats (4-1). The rivalry is historic, and the Wildcats currently lead the series 32-28-1. This is the biggest game in Ohio in all of 2022 in my opinion. After 51 years, St. Ignatius head coach Chuck Kyle will retire at the end of the season.
The St. Ed’s team this year is special after talking to coach Tom Lombardo and seeing the results the Eagles have shown throughout the season. The Eagles have played the toughest schedule through Week 6 according to fantastic50.net and still have the No. 1 schedule in Ohio. This year, the Eagles are led by quarterback Casey Bullock.
The St. Ignatius Wildcats are playing for something more this year. They are playing with a special type of passion right now for their coach. Coach Kyle has been with the Wildcats his whole 50-year career. The Wildcats are led by quarterback Josh Papesh. Their schedule has been rough as well this year.
This rivalry is special. If you ask people around the greater Cleveland area, they may tell you it’s almost a holiday. This is such a special experience to see. Then, you look at how good both the teams are doing, the fact a four-time National Championship winning coach is retiring this year also after 50-plus years on the sidelines.
If you don’t have anything to do on Saturday, go to the game. If you do have something to do, either cancel said plans or find a way to watch it on TV. I'm excited for the opportunities these young men get to compete against one another!
We had a chance to talk to St. Ed's coach Tom Lombardo and St. Ignatius coach Chuck Kyle about how special this game is.
