Avon captures a regional title with a 28-14 win over Medina Highland

Strongsville , Ohio — Strongsville Ohio was where this high stakes playoff matchup took place. The 13-0 Avon Eagles looked to take on 11-2 Medina Highland. Avon remains undefeated and moves on to the state semifinal.

The game started out with both teams trading empty possessions. Both teams got early pressure from their defensive lineman and the game was scoreless six minutes in.

Avon got going with a drive centered around Matt Maxey. He ran for multiple first downs and caught a 19 yard touchdown with one minute left in the first quarter. Avon led 7-0.

The second quarter started out slow with empty drives. But Around 3 minutes left Avon defensive back Carson Canning caught an interception.

The Eagles took advantage of the short field with a 14 yard touchdown run from Jakorion Caffey. The Eagle defense continued to dominate, not allowing much success for the Hornet offense. The Eagles led at halftime 14-0.

Highland put together a good drive to start the half. First downs from Casey Myser and Tommy Turk set up a one yard touchdown on a QB sneak from Peyton Janickas. Avon led 14-7 with seven minutes to go in the third.

Both teams traded empty possessions before Maxey got a 30 yard reception. The catch set up a 15 yard touchdown from Caffey. The Eagles led 21-7 with ten minutes to go in the game.

Highland Medina responded right back with a 50 yard touchdown catch from Myser. Avon led 21-14 with seven minutes to go.

Both teams slowed down for a couple of possessions but Caffey closed the game with another red zone rushing touchdown around two minutes left. The Eagles won 28-14.

I asked Caffey about their redzone execution..

“Our red zone offense is definitely key for sure, because we know if we get down there we wanna finish it and not just get three points," said Caffey.

I got a chance to talk to head coach for Avon, Mike Elder.

“Our kids work exceptionally hard, our goal is to win a state championship," said Elder. "It’s  nice to get over that hump and get ourselves back into the state final four.”

The Eagles will be back in action against Hoban at 7 PM Friday November 24th at Parma Byers Field in a State semifinal matchup.
