Avon dominates St Ignatius in season opener 42-21

Downtown Cleveland, Ohio - FirstEnergy Stadium held a Cleveland.com top ten matchup where Avon faced off against St. Ignatius.

Avon established their run game early, earning themselves a dominant 42-21 victory.

The Eagles came out and set the tone forcing a three and out. Cam Wendell rushed for a huge 40 yard play. He capped the drive off with a four yard touchdown run. The Eagles led 7-0 with nine minutes to go.

They finished off the quarter leading 14-0 thanks to some timely third down conversions from Nolan Good. One of those conversions was a 14 yard touchdown to Ty Beerbohm.

Nolan Good spoke about Beerbohm’s performance tonight.

"He’s such a big target  …he’s got great hands, he’s got a great radius  … I feel like I can kind of just throw it up there and let him make a play,” said Good.

Ignatius started to find some momentum in the second with the pass game. A few key first down  receptions from Gaven Vollmer got them going. This set up a big 34 yard touchdown grab in traffic between multiple defenders from Luke Simms.  They trailed 21-7 with six minutes left in the quarter.  The half concluded with the Eagles up, 21-7.

In the third quarter playmakers in the passing game started to make their marks.  Multiple big receptions came from Cole Kepner and Matt Maxey to set up a rushing touchdown for Sean Burke. Avon led 28-7 with eight minutes left.

Ignatius refused to quit all night. They answered right back with a 34 yard touchdown reception from Owen Colwell. The quarter ended with Avon leading 28-14.

Avon came into the fourth ready to put the nail in the coffin. The very first play Tyler Kaufmann ran for an 11 yard touchdown.

But once again the Wildcats just wouldn’t lay down. A drive full of first down receptions eventually set up a five yard touchdown run for Colwell. They trailed 35-21 with seven minutes to go.

From that point it was all Avon. The Eagle defense left no room for hope after a huge fumble recovery. The turnover set up a short field drive, ending with a one yard touchdown run from good.

The Eagles have another big test coming up  versus Canton McKinley. They will be at home on August 30th at 7 p.m.

Head Coach for Avon Mike Elder briefly touched on the matchup

“What we really want to do is get better every week. So as long as we’re playing better football every week, I’m proud of whatever the outcome is," said Elder. "Next week will be a great test against another physical team in Canton McKinley.”
