Macedonia, OH - In a rematch of sorts after the two schools faced off in the OHSAA Football playoffs this past fall, the Canfield Cardinals and Holy Name Green Wave squared off on the softball diamond in Regional Semifinal action Wednesday evening. Canfield got the scoring started in the bottom of the 1st inning when Hailey Freedy singled to right field, bringing around Jenna Triveri who led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Later in the inning, Malena Toth helped her own cause when she singled up the middle, bringing home Freedy.
In the 2nd inning, Canfield added another 2 to the board on a Gianna Pannunzio triple over the right fielder's head, plating Sami Economous and Haydyn Merrit. Toth continued to put 0's on the board as she stymied the Green Wave offense through 3 innings.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Canfield really opened this one up, putting a 5 on the board, bringing the score through 3 innings of play 9-0. The Cardinals plated 2 on a Mackenzie Koeing single to right, scoring Faith Morell and Marina Koenig. Later it was Merritt reaching on an error and Mackenzie Koeing coming across to score. On the following pitch, Sydney Lutz was able to score on a wild pitch. On the next at-bat, Haydyn Merritt would be the Cardinal scampering home on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 9-0.
Following a scoreless 4th on both sides and with the threat of the Mercy Rule one run away, Holy Name was finally able to put a smudge on Malena Toth's outing. Taking advantage of two free passes and a fielding error, Green Wave Aubrey Stephens was able to smack a double down the left field line, plating Anna Soos and Alli Rochette, making the score 9-2.
In the bottom of the 5th, the Cardinals came out with a vengeance. Jenna Triveri started the rally with a leadoff single, followed by Gianna Pannunzio singling as well. With 2 runners on, it was Hailey Freedy sending a double to left field, plating Triveri. The next batter was Faith Morrell who swung at the first pitch, sending a screamer back up the middle and bringing Pannunzio and Freedy around to end the game by Mercy Rule with a score of 12-2.
With the win, the Cardinals will face Marlington in the Regional Championship Friday evening at Nordonia High School in Macedonia at 6:00 pm.
