Garfield girls dominate in 58-42 home win over Brookfield behind McCoy's big night

Garrettsville, OH- The Garfield Lady G-MEN were looking to get back on track after losing only their 2nd game of the season this past Thursday to Crestview. In their way on Monday night was the Brookfield Warriors who handed Garfield their first loss of the season 53-44 on January 9th.

It was a slow scoring start to the game as the teams managed to only score 2 points a piece until the 4:57 mark when Garfield's Mandy Cardinal converted an and one layup and free throw putting them up 5-2. Cardinal would also hit a three ball with just over 3 minutes to play for a 6 point 1st quarter. The G-MEN scored the final 4 points of the 1st after trailing by a point to take a 14-11 lead.

The second quarter was all G-MEN almost literally! They started the 2nd quarter on a 12-0 run with 7 of those points coming from senior standout Laura McCoy. After Nora Trent scored back to back buckets to cap off the run, Brookfield finally got on the board on a Sophia Hook jumper. That would be the only points of the 2nd quarter for the Warriors. Garfield would score the final 5 points of the half to take a commanding 31-13 lead into halftime. McCoy had 9 big points in the 2nd to give her a game high 11 points. Cailey Wellman led the Warriors with 6 points.

Brookfield looked to get back into the game to start the 2nd half. The Warriors gained some momentum outscoring the G-MEN 8-6 before a Madeline Shirkey bucket inside and a Laura McCoy three gave Garfield their biggest lead of the night at 42-21 with 3:20 to play 3rd quarter.

Brookfield scored the final 3 points of quarter three but trailed 44-24 entering the fourth. It was a balanced scoring attack in the 3rd for Garfield.

The fourth quarter was high scoring for the Warriors who put up 18 points but the damage had already been done by the G-MEN. Sophia Hook scored 7 points in the 4th for Brookfield all coming from the free throw line as she was a perfect 7 for 7. Cailey Wellman also dropped in 7 points in the final frame as the two combined for 14 of the Warriors 18 points in the fourth. Laura McCoy matched that with 7 points of her own for Garfield. The final score was 58-42 as Garfield was able to avenge their previous loss to the Warriors.

Laura McCoy was sensational with 23 points leading Garfield to win #18 on the season. Mandy Cardinal put up 9 points and 6 rebounds while Nora Trent chipped in 8 points and also grabbed 6 boards.

Cailey Wellman had a nice night for Brookfield dropping in 18 points with 9 rebounds. Sophia Hook added 16 points.
