Garfield Lady G-MEN take down Campbell Memorial 64-45 behind Cardinal's 22 points

GARRETTSVILLE, OH- The Garfield Lady G-MEN hosted the Campbell Memorial Red Devils on Monday night in an MVAC matchup. Both teams were looking for their 3rd win of the season. Garfield was looking to snap a 2-game losing streak while the Red Devils were trying to stop a 4-game skid.

The Red Devils scored the first points of the game as Diamon Sims converted a bucket inside. After that is was all G-MEN in the opening quarter as they went on a 20-0 run before Campbell scored the final points of the quarter on a Yaleiska Diaz three ball. Mandy Cardinal and Kaelyn Tasker paced the G-MEN run with 7 and 6 points respectively. Garfield held a 20-5 lead after one.

Campbell started the 2nd quarter on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 22-13 after a three ball from Angelis Espada. Garfield would answer right back with a 7-0 run capped off by a Charlee Hill three to push it back out to 29-13. The Red Devils would outscore the G-MEN 9-6 to close out the half. Garfield led 35-21. Cardinal led all first half scorers with 13 points also chipping in with 6 rebounds.

Garfield would score first to start the 3rd on a Kali Tasker bucket. From there it was even up the rest of the 3rd quarter. The G-MEN would score the final four points of the 3rd quarter, all coming from Kaelyn Tasker, to take a 47-31 lead into the 4th quarter.

The two teams exchanged three balls to start the final quarter as Kali Tasker's shot from deep was matched by the Red Devils Angelis Espada. The G-MEN scored the next five points to take their biggest lead of the night at 54-34. But Campbell was not done as senior forward Diamon Sims scored eight straight points including a pair of three balls. Those points followed by a Yaleiska Diaz free throw cut the deficit back to 11 at 54-43. Garfield would withstand the run closing the game out on a 10-2 run to take the 64-45 victory.

Mandy Cardinal led the G-MEN with 22 points and 9 rebounds. I asked her afterwards about her performance.

"It's a team game," said Cardinal. "One person doesn't win the game for us so I'm thankful for all of my teammates that I have."

Attitude reflects leadership and that comment shows the type of leader that Cardinal is for this young G-MEN squad.

Senior Diamon Sims had a very nice game for the Red Devils, posting a double/double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The G-MEN look to carry the momentum of this win to Liberty when they travel to face the Leopards on Thursday.
