Shaker Heights, OH- In a Great Lakes Hockey League contest, the Gilmour Lancers traveled to Thornton Park to take on the Shaker Heights Red Raiders. Gilmour entered the contest at 3-2-0 while Shaker came into the matchup at 3-4-0. The Lancers and Red Raiders have a rivalry, so the ingredients were there for an exciting game to play out.
The first period belonged to the Lancers. They put two goals on the board by Gavin Fielder and Colton Fairchild, with a Shaker goal in the middle, to take a 2-1 lead. They also put 13 SOG (shots on goal) to the Red Raiders 4 SOG. But goals and SOG aside, the pace and flow of the game was controlled by Gilmour. The Red Raiders appeared to be on their heels throughout the the entire period.
The second period went a little bit differently as it was the Red Raiders who put the first goal on the board tying the game up at 2. Gilmour didn't allow the game to stay tied for long though as they retook the lead, 3-2, with 8:02 to go in the period by Cole Bridges. The score remained 3-2 through the end of the second period.
Although the teams traded goals, the Lancers still appeared to be in control.
Midway through the third period, Shaker had a golden opportunity to tie the game up as Gilmour had two players in the penalty box. However, the Red Raiders couldn't take advantage of the situation as the Lancers held off the Red Raiders attack to maintain their 3-2 lead.
But deep into the third period, Shaker put the puck in the back of the net to tie the game up at 3. As the clock ticked down, it seemed like overtime was an inevitably. However, Gilmour had other ideas. With less than a minute to go, the Lancers put the puck in the back of the net on which turned out to be the game winning goal by Rocco Hice. Gilmour defeated Shaker Heights 4-3.
I had a chance to talk to Gilmour coach John Malloy after the game about his teams win.
