On Thursday the Cleveland Guardians exercised the $12M team option for Jose Ramirez for the 2022 season per the MLB Network.
Cleveland holds team options of $12M for 2022 and $14M for the 2023 season. These options were part of a 5-year, $26M extension the Ramirez signed before the start of the 2017 season.
The 29-year old Ramirez continues to be one of the best hitters in MLB. In 2021 he batted .266 with 32 doubles, 36 home runs, 103 runs batted in, 111 runs scored and 27 stolen bases in 152 games. His 6.3 fWAR ranked 6th highest in MLB.
It will be interesting to see if Cleveland offers Ramirez another contract extension at some point. His name was thrown around in trade rumors at the 2021 trade deadline. The Guardians had allegedly made a trade offer to the Blue Jays but Toronto was not willing to meet Cleveland's steep asking price. If the Guardians plan to be a playoff contender starting in 2022 locking up Ramirez to another long-term deal would be a wise choice.
