Guardians trade a pair to the National League

On Monday the Cleveland Guardians traded outfielder Harold Ramirez to the Chicago Cubs and pitcher Jean Carlos Mejia to the Milwaukee Brewers. Both players were among seven players designated for assignment and removed from the 40-man roster on Friday in preparation for the Rule 5 Draft.

Ramirez was sent to the Cubs in exchange for cash considerations. Last season with Cleveland Ramirez hit .268 with 21 doubles, 7 homers and 41 RBI's in 92 games. While Ramirez gave the team a boost with his bat, he was rated as one of the worst defensive outfielders in the American League for the 2021 season.

J.C. Mejia was sent to the Brewers for cash considerations or a player to be named later. He had a rough 2021 season with Cleveland. Due to multiple injuries to the Guardians starting rotation, Mejia was called up to fill in before he was ready. The result was a 1-7 record with an 8.25 ERA in 17 games (11 starts). Mejia has been pitching well out of the bullpen in the Dominican Winter League where he has a 1.00 ERA in 7 appearances .

Daniel "Jet" Johnson, Justin Garza, Scott Moss, Kyle Nelson and Alex Young are the other five players who were designated for assignment along with Ramirez and Mejia. Some of them could also be traded before they clear waivers.
