Highland girls run past Medina 51-32

Medina, Ohio - On Monday night the Medina Battling Bees came to Highland High School to face the Lady Hornets. Both girls teams had solid records as Medina came in at 7-1 before and Highland at 6-2. Highland was on a four game winning streak while Medina was coming off a loss.

Winning the tip was Highland, and their first possession ended in a traveling violation turning over the ball. The first point was scored by Kennedy Morgan for Highland at the free throw line. However Medina cashed in a 3-pointer after that.

There were four jump balls in the first period, a solid sign of hustle by both squads. Medina made another 3-pointer, this one by Grace Madison. Afterwards, Highland got a layup to counteract Medina’s shot. A third triple in the first for Medina was converted by Kate Bobey. Medina had the lead 10-9 after one.

To start the second period Highland ran in transition, but the ball was blocked by Medina at the rim. Olivia Klanac stole the ball in the backcourt and scored a layup for Medina. Morgan blocked a shot inside, and later hit a 3-pointer for Highland on the other end cutting Medina’s lead to one. Aleena VanKirk hit two free throws to give Highland the lead. Alayna Tessena blocked another one of Medina’s shots and went to the foul line for Highland. Morgan hit yet another 3-pointer on the left wing, giving Highland a three point lead. Emily Miller also joins in cashing in a 3-pointer for Highland who took a 23-17 lead into the half.

To start the third quarter VanKirk picked off a pass and passed it up to Grace Madison who was fouled. She hit one of her two free throws. Morgan hit another 3-pointer after missing her first attempt and getting an offensive rebound to get another shot. Emily Miller hit her own 3-pointer as well giving Highland a thirteen point lead.

Bobey scored the first points of the second half for Medina after a few minutes. Morgan hit another 3-pointer for Highland this time on the right wing. VanKirk picked off a pass which led to a Grace Weber 3-pointer and a seventeen point lead for Highland. Weber hits another triple as the Hornets continued to make it rain from deep. Highland was up 41-24 after three.

To start the final period Grade Madison hit a 3-pointer for Medina. Later Alayna Tessena stole the ball for Highland and got an easy layup with no defender around. Kennedy Morgan hit another triple a seemingly constant story tonight. Highland put this one away for a 51-32 win over their crosstown rival.

Leading the way for Highland was Kennedy Morgan with 18 points and five 3-pointers.
