Huskies miscues cost victory in 5-2 Sectional Final loss to Lakeview

Cortland OH- The Cardinal Huskies (12-7) traveled to face the host Lakeview Bulldogs (17-3 in an OHSAA Sectional Final contest. The Huskies had Jake Bean on the bump to start, as Andrew Brown was called upon for the Bulldogs.

Andrew Brown faced leadoff hitter Josh Soltis to start it off. A single had the Huskies their first baserunner of the night. With two outs back-to-back walks from Logan Strever and Carter Tucker to load them up. The Huskie hopes of a big 1st inning were squandered as Jackson Puruczky grounded out to first ending the top of the 1st.

The Huskie defense had a strong start through the first two batters. Matt Hissa and Carter Tucker were able to retire Andrew Brown and Tyler Capan respectively. Alex Stowe went down hacking to become Jake Bean´s first strikeout of the night.

Austin Jones reached first on an error to start the 2nd inning for Cardinal. The second error from the Bulldogs comes with one out that allowed Charlie Soltis to reach safely. A fielders choice and fly out ended the inning, bringing Lakeview to bat. A four run 2nd inning gave Lakeview a lead they would not surrender. Three-straight one out walks gave the Huskies the opportunity to come storming back. All momentum was halted as Jones struck out and Hunter Gresch flied out to right. Another one out Huskie error followed up by a single from Matthew DeProfio had Lakeview threatening to strike once again. They were shut down as a bunt back to Bean on the mound and a quick toss to home and tag from Puruczky behind the plate saved a run for Cardinal. Brown was retired to end the inning.

A leadoff hit-by-pitch for Charlie Soltis and one out base knock for Domen gave the Huskies a scoring opportunity. Bean would deliver with an RBI double to put Cardinal on the board, cutting the lead down to 3. A wacky 5-2-4 double play got reliever Tyler Capan out of another jam. The aforementioned Capan led off with a seeing-eye single between third and short. Back to back ground outs nearly had the inning over for Cardinal. But Lakeview was able to bring Capan across and counter the Huskies with a run of their own. With Alex Stowe at bat a passed ball would bring home Capan. Stowe was later struck out by Bean.

Strike outs of Tucker and Jones were split as Purczky reached on a one out error. Gresch would reach on two out fielders choice as the toss to second from shortstop Gino Lazzari trickled into center. With two one and two out Charlie Soltis grounded out to end the 5th for Cardinal. Bean struck out all three Lakeview batters in the 5th, although DeProfio reached on an error.

The top of the Huskie order was up to bat as they were down 5-1 in the 6th. Troy Domen´s double and stolen base gave Bean an RBI opportunity. His sacrifice fly drove in Domen as Cardinal cut the lead back down to 3. After Logan Strever reached on an error, Carter Tucker was retired to end the 6th. A 1-2-3 6th for Bean the included his 9th and final strikeout kept the Bulldogs in check heading into the 7th.
