Mayfield, Ohio- The Mayfield Wildcats looked to defend their home field against Riverside. Turnovers and finding their stride late helped them come out of the game victorious.
Riverside came out and set the tone on the second play of the game. Kyndall Mccaleb broke free past multiple defenders for a 75 yard touchdown.
Mayfield struggled to get going until Jack Elliott picked off David Seibert. They took advantage of the turnover with a scoring drive. Ben Koret scored a two yard run to tie the game at seven. The first quarter ended with both teams tied at seven.
Riverside started the second quarter with a 16 play drive. They got into the red zone after a 21 yard run from Seibert. They scored a field goal to take a 10-7 lead with 5:48 to go in the half.
Mayfield answered with the last score of the quarter. A 47 yard reception from Max Thurman set them up in enemy territory. He caught another pass that got them on the goal line. Rogers capped off the drive with a one yard quarterback sneak.
Mayfield led 14-10 at halftime.
The third was slow for Mayfield. Koret got going more specifically in the passing game but they couldn’t score in the period. Riverside gained some momentum after an interception with about three minutes to go. The return got them in enemy territory. Mccaleb eventually capped off the drive with a two yard touchdown. Riverside closed the quarter leading 17-14.
Riverside’s momentum carried into fourth, they seemed to be running away with the game. Johnathon Harris caught a huge interception for Mayfield with around seven minutes left to turn the tide. Mayfield wasn't able to capitalize as their second half offensive struggles continued.
They eventually got the ball back with five minutes to go. They put together a scoring drive that sealed the game. Thurman converted a huge fourth down with a big catch to keep the game alive. After getting to the goal line Rogers scored a two yard quarterback sneak. They closed the game with a big defensive stop.
Rogers touched on that last drive briefly.
“I think we needed to just put more drives together in more of the quarters. Last play coming down I kind of just asked for the ball on the one yard line. I knew I could get in there so I just lowered my shoulder and got in there. I knew no one was going to stop me,” said Rogers after the win.
Mayfield ended on top, winning 21-17.
Mayfield will be back in action at home Oct. 25 versus Willoughby South. Kickoff will begin at 7 p.m.
