Midview tops Solon 62-59 to win Regional Title

Medina, Ohio - On Saturday night the girl’s Solon Comets were facing off against the Midview Middies. Both teams were trying to nmake it to the Final Four and compete for a OHSAA D1 State Championship.


To start the game off Mya DiFranco hit a mid-range jumper after Midview got an offensive board. The crowd was deafening, as both student sections were packed, and cheering after every basket or defensive stop.



Midview’s 6'5" Mary Meng denied a shot at the rim, where she barely even jumped to get the block. The score at the end of the first was 13-12 in favor of Solon. The game looked to be a nail-biter.


To start the second, Midview went on a quick 5-0 run. However, Solon stopped the run making two 3-pointers and giving the Comets the lead once again.



This quarter was a quarter of runs. Both sides kept going back and forth. Midview once had a five point lead, but Solon tied it up soon after. The score was 31-29 with Midview leading at halftime.


To start the next half, both sides made their first shots, both 3-pointers. Solon’s Erica Olszweski made a nice reverse layup impressing both crowds.



For practically all of this quarter, Midview had the lead as slim as it may have been. Solon went on a small run and took back the lead.


Solon was once down by four, but they went on a 10-0 run, and went up six. The score was 46-40 at the end of the third, Solon leading.


To start the fourth Morgan Blackford hit a 3-pointer for Solon and kept the aggression going. The Comets kept their opponents in metaphorical arms-length away in terms of the score, and the game looked to be in their favor.



However Midview creeped back into the game, and with two minutes left, it was a one possession game. Midview almost took back the lead, but Solon got a chasedown block to prevent that.


Olszewki came up big, drawing a charge with less than a minute left. Midview’s Olivia DiFranco hit an and-one, leaving 8.4 seconds left on the clock. However, she missed the free throw, and then a jump ball was called, possession to Midview. They hung on to win it 62-59.


Olivia DiFranco had 23 for Midview while Morgan Blackford scored 20 points for Solon.
