Preppers soar over Hawks in Battle of Gates Mills with 14-1 win



Hunting Valley OH- Thursday evening the Hawken Hawks (13-9/7-3 CVC) traveled to face rival University Preppers (15-6). Riley Penn took the mound for the Preppers, as Parker O´Keefe was called on to toe the rubber for the Hawks.


Jacob Strovsky didn´t wait long before picking up the 1st hit of the game for Hawken. His leadoff single set up Lucas Brandt who was able to work himself a walk. Penn was unfazed and quickly responded by striking out the next three Hawks batters.



A rough first inning for O´Keefe and Hawken, giving up five runs in the bottom of the 1st. Benn Elliott struck first with a leadoff single. Joey Zigman followed up with a basehit of his own. Ryan Pattison brought home the first Prepper run as his fly ball to right was dropped for an error. Deacon Nelson´s stellar night at the plate got started in the 1st as his RBI single put University up 2-0. Riley Penn kept things going with a single to load the bases. Matthew McMahon and Tucker Gree both record sacrifice fly´s to bring two more University runners across. With two-outs Sal Prolizo´s walk and heads up baserunning in an attempt to steal 2nd gave Penn the opportunity score, putting University up 5-0. James Bucci would be the final out on a fly out to right.



After a long first in the field for Hawken, they were able to get a run back by plating one in the 2nd. Eli Thompson´s leadoff walk that was accommpanied by Ethan Gipson´s walk with one out had Hawken looking to strike back. Maddox Ruch connected with an RBI single to put the Hawks on the board. The 3rd walked batter of the inning by Penn loaded the bases. A line drive off the bat of Brandt was caught as Stovsky got doubled up at 1st.



After scoring five in the 1st, University scored four in the 2nd. Elliott´s single was complimented by Pattison´s one out RBI triple. Following the triple, a string of three consecutive hits for University. An RBI single from Nelson, making it to 2nd on Penn´s groundball to center field. McMahon brought Nelson around to score with a run-scoring single to right. Greer grounded into a fielders choice and Penn scored as McMahon was called out on his way to 2nd. Prolizo grounded out to end the 2nd. 9-1 University.


Besides a leadoff hit from Dominic Brancel, the Hawks were retired 1-2-3 after. The final out being Riley Penn´s 5th strikeout through three innings of work on the mound. Bucci´s took a pitch that hit him, starting off another four run frame for the Preppers. Joey Zigman picked up the first hit of the inning before back to back extra-base hits scored three runs for University. An RBI double by Pattison, and Nelsons two-run triple had University up 12-1. A pitcher to pitcher crime comes in the 3rd, The Hawks reliver Billy Butler hit Preppers starter Riley Penn. Nelson scored from 3rd on a sacrifice fly that ended up in a double play as Penn tried to tag from 1st but was thrown out on his way to 2nd. Hawken ends the 3rd down 13-1.


Penn got revenge for the hit by pitch, by striking out Butler to start the 4th. Ruch´s drew the 5th walk off Riley Penn, but was able to avoid trouble, striking out Stovsky to end the frame. Max Leombruno would come to bat in a pinch-hit at-bat. He shot a groundball right past the first baseman. After Bucci´s strikeout, Ben Elliott would drive in the last run for University with an RBI double. Zigman was recorded out on a grounder. 14-1 Preppers heading to the 5th.


Sammy Martin would come on to pitch in a non-save opportunity. A walk to Brandt and base hit from Brancel got things boiling for Hawken. Brandy was thrown out trying to steal 3rd. Paxon Laschinger popped out and with two outs Eric Thompsons groundball to 1st would be the final out of the night.


The University Preppers offense exploded for 14 hits and 14 runs. Deacon Nelson, Riley Penn, Ben Elliott, Jeoy Zigman and Ryan Pattison all collected multi-hit games tonight. Matthew McMahon had 3 RBI, paired with Deacon Nelson´s 4 RBI and a pair of RBI from Ryan Pattison and Tucker Greer.

A solid pitching performance from Riley Penn, as he earned the win tonight. In four innings of work he allowed three hits, one run while walking five batters and striking out seven. Sammy Martin pitched a shut-out 5th, allowing one hit and a pair of walks.

A quiet night from the Hawken batters. Dominic Brancel collected two hits while Maddox Ruch and Jacob Stovsky both had one hit. Ruch drove in the only Hawks run tonight.

Parker O´Keefe finished his outing after 2-1/3 innings of work, surrendering 11 hits, 9 earned runs with a walk. Bill Butler came on in relief in an inning and 2/3 of work. He allowed three hits, two earned runs with a strikeout.
