Southeast girls top Mogadore 50-44 in wild overtime thriller

Palmyra, OH- The Southeast Lady Pirates hosted Mogadore in a PTC matchup on a frigid Wednesday evening in Palmyra. The Pirates came in at 13-6 looking to keep their solid season rolling while the Wildcats were 8-8 and trying to climb over the .500 mark. Southeast took the first matchup 35-34 on 12/19/22 in Mogadore.


The first quarter was like a continuation of the first matchup between these two teams as they played pretty much even up with Southeast holding an 11-10 advantage after one.



The Pirates really ramped things up in the second quarter. Southeast held a 16-14 lead with just under 4:00 to play in the half when they went on a 9-0 run to open up a double digit lead with Kaitlin Long chipping in 5 of those 9 points. Mogadore was only able to score 8 points in the second quarter all by junior guard Brook McIntyre. The Pirates held a 29-18 lead at the half. McIntyre led all scorers with 11 points. Kayla Grope and Kaitlin Long has 6 points each for Southeast.



Mogadore started to make their move in the third quarter as they went on a 6-0 run after Grope scored the first points of the half for Southeast on two made free throws. The run was capped off by a Ari Tompkins three ball that pulled Mogadore within 7 at 31-24. After a Grope jumper, the Wildcats went on another 6-0 mini run that made it a 33-30 game late in the quarter. Southeast was able to regroup and score the final four points of the quarter and take a 37-30 lead into the final quarter.



The fourth quarter was a wild one! McIntyre scored the first 5 points of the quarter on a 3 point shot and then a fast break layup after a steal cutting the Pirates lead to 37-36. After Southeast got the lead back out to three, it was again McIntyre pulling Mogadore within a point at 40-39 with just over a minute to play after both teams went cold offensively. The Wildcats stopped the Pirates on their next possession and Olivia Kidd was fouled going to the basket on the other end. She converted 1 of 2 free throws tying the game up at 40.



The Wildcats took their first lead at 42-40 on a McIntyre score with 24 seconds to play. From there it was a free throw battle the last of which Ari Tompkins split to tie it up at 42 with 6.1 seconds to play. Off the second free throw miss the Wildcats grabbed the rebound and went the length of the floor, but McKenna Whitehead couldn't convert a game winning layup at the buzzer and we headed to overtime.



The overtime period was all Southeast. Mogadore scored the first 2 points on a pair of Jocelyn Lawrentz free throws putting them up 44-42. From there the Pirates pitched a shutout defensively while scoring the final 8 points of overtime with some clutch free throw shooting by Grope and Kaitlin Long. The Pirates took this one 50-44 to sweep the season series and move to 14-6 on the season.



Kayla Grope led the way for Southeast with 16 points. Kaitlin Long and Cameron McPeak each chipped in 10 points. Brook McIntyre led the way for Mogadore with 20 points.
