What a fun Fall for sports fans here in Northeast Ohio!
Well, sort of.
The Guardians and Cavs have been amazing!
Unfortunately, the Browns have certainly been a surprise.
But for now, let's focus on the positives.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are 11-0!
This is the best start in franchise history!
Yes, you heard that right. Even after having LeBron James for many years, no other Cavs team has started the season this strong. In fact, at 11-0, the Cavs now have the 8th best NBA start ever!
With a victory in their next game, they will tie the 1996-1997 Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls who have the 6th best start in NBA history.
To break the all-time record for best start, the Cavs would have to win the next 14 games in a row to start the season 25-0. If they were to attain that, they would break the record of 24-0 which the Golden State Warriors achieved in 2015-2016.
So how have the Cavs got to 11-0 and who is leading the Cavs?
Cavs Hire New Coach
In a somewhat surprising move, the Cavs replaced Head Coach JB Bickerstaff at the end of the 2024 season.
Over five years, Bickerstaff had a 170-159 record, with his best season coming in 2022-2023 when he led the Cavs to a 51-31 regular season record.
Bickerstaff is now the Head Coach of the Detroit Pistons.
Soon after deciding to change coaches, the Cavs hired Kenny Atkinson.
In addition to a long history of coaching in the NBA over the last twenty years, most recently, Atkinson was an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors under Head Coach Steve Kerr. As an NBA Head Coach, Atkinson now has a record of 129-190.
Cavs Great Start
In the first three victories this season over Toronto, Detroit, and Washington, the Cavs had an average margin of victory of 20.5 points.
In their fourth victory over the New York Knicks, the Cavs won by six points, 110-104.
In the Cavs fifth victory, LeBron James returned to Cleveland with his son Bronny. The Cavs easily defeated the Lakers 134-110, and Bronny James scored his first two NBA points.
Then, on November 1st, the Cavs defeated the Orlando Magic, 120-109.
Winning their 7th and 8th games against the Milwaukee Bucks proved to be quite a challenge.
On November 2nd, the Cavs defeated the Bucks by one point, 114-113. Then two days later, on November 4th, the Cavs defeated the Bucks, 116-113.
Last week, the Cavs defeated the New Orleans Pelicans (131-122), Golden State Warriors (136-117), and Brooklyn Nets (105-100).
Who is Leading the Cavs?
Currently, the Cavaliers have 6 players averaging in double figures.
Averaging over 20 points per game this season for the Cavs are Donovan Mitchell (22.5 point per game average), and Darius Garland (20.5 ppg.).
Post players Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen are averaging 18.4 and 13.9 points per game respectively.
Shooting guard's and small forward's, Ty Jerome (10 ppg.) and Caris Lavert (12 ppg.) are also averaging double figures.
Currently, Jarrett Allen is 9th in the NBA with an 11.1 average rebounds per game. Evans Mobley is 7th in average block shots per game with 1.8.
As a team in their 11 game winning streak, the Cavs lead the league in average points scored per game with 122.7. The Cavs also lead in the category of field goal percentage (52.8 percent), and 3 point field goal percentage (42.2 percent).
Tonight, the Cavs will try to improve their record to 12-0 when they travel to Chicago to take on the Bulls.
Tip off is scheduled for 8pm EST.
