Euclid, Ohio- This Friday night saw a matchup between GCC foes, Euclid (0-1) and Brunswick (1-0). After a competitive first half, Brunswick’s fast paced style of play proved to be too much for Euclid. A third quarter onslaught helped them earn a dominant win.
The Blue Devils implemented their fast pace and got into the paint early. Thai Duncan started out hot for Euclid scoring their first seven points. Duncan’s high level of play helped Euclid jump out to a seven to five lead. Brunswick went on a seven to zero run which helped them close out the quarter up 14-11.
In the second Brunswick caught a cold spell from beyond the arc. Euclid took advantage of the uncharacteristic misses and created offense of their own. Sean Barnett got the momentum rolling for Brunswick with nine in the quarter. He drove to the basket and converted a three point play. A few possessions later he knocked down a three prompting a timeout. Brunswick led 26-25 with two minutes to go. They went into halftime leading 34-27, Barnett ended the half with another three.
Brunswick’s pressure and high tempo started to wear down the Panthers in the third. Brunswick got a lot of easy baskets at the rim, and at the foul line. They outscored Euclid 22-6 in the period, Trey Drexler had 11 points in the quarter. Around the five minute mark he got several baskets around the rim. He also got an assist after Aidan Shaker converted an and one layup. They led 44-33.
“In the first half I missed a lot of point blank shots. All of my teammates, they had my back…we just came out with a lot of energy in that second half and then pulled away,” remarked Drexler.
After struggling from outside in the first half, Drexler knocked down his first triple around the three minute mark. The Blue Devils went into the fourth leading 56-33.
Brunswick shut the door on the Panthers in the fourth quarter. Euclid continued to fight, but Brunswick wouldn’t let up. Matt Morgan got a few baskets at the rim in the period. Duncan got a couple of points in the paint for Euclid including a breakaway dunk with one minute left. Brunswick finished on top, winning 76-47.
“We struggled obviously in the first half, I thought the run at the end of the first half kind of carried right over into the second half…we play a very tough schedule this year so we’re going to need that kind of effort on the defensive end,” said Mackey.
