After a 48 hour postponement, Kent Roosevelt takes down rival Ravenna 28-20

Ravenna, OH - The Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders and Ravenna Ravens complete their suspended week 1 game on Saturday afternoon at Portage Community Bank Stadium. Kent was leading Ravenna 21-14 at the half on Thursday when thunderstorms hit the area and did not leave time to resume the game that night.


First half scoring from Thursday:


Ravenna opened the scoring with 5:27 to play in the 1st quarter on a Daniel Sanders 46-yard touchdown run. The PAT put them ahead 7-0.


Kent would answer back 2 minutes into the 2nd quarter on a Jaiden Portis 10-yard touchdown run following a Ravens fumble. The PAT tied the game at 7-7.


Ravenna's Jaxon Kelly busted a nice kick return into Rough Riders territory setting up a Ravens scoring drive that was capped off by a Sanders 4-yard touchdown run. The PAT put Ravenna back up 14-7.


Roosevelt would close out the half scoring the final 14 points. QB Jack Smith hit WR Lincoln Wade from 10 yards out for a touchdown. The PAT tied this one up at 14. Smith would strike again before the half hitting Jaiden Portis in stride for a 54-yard TD. PAT gave Kent the 21-14 lead going into halftime.



Second half (Saturday):


The Ravens received the ball to open the second half as the teams ramped back up after a 2 day layoff. They were able to move the ball inside the Rough Riders 30 yard line before QB Bobby Melzer was picked off on a pass in the end zone by Kent CB James Lewis.



After holding Kent to a 3-and-out and forcing a punt, Ravens RB Daniel Sanders took a handoff around the left side to pay dirt from 39 yards out. The PAT was missed making it a 21-20 Rough Riders lead.


Ravenna carried the momentum into their defensive possession as Jaxon Kelly strip sacked Kent QB Jack Smith and it was recovered by Ravens DT Dave Davis at the Kent 40 yard line.

Unfortunately the Ravens were unable to capitalize on the turnover and were forced to punt.


Roosevelt would then put together a long 10 play, 68 yard scoring drive that ended with a Smith 3-yard touchdown pass to Theodore Maccarone in the corner of the end zone. The PAT gave Kent an 8 point lead at 28-20 with 8:56 to play.



The Roosevelt defense held the Ravens on a second straight 3-and-out. The Ravens defense then came up big forcing a Kent punt on 4th and 19. But on the first play of Ravenna's next possession, Daniel Sanders committed a crucial turnover fumbling the ball at their 17-yard line turning it back over to Roosevelt.


Ravenna would get the ball back at their 21-yard line with 44 seconds to play but were unable to move the ball as Kent Roosevelt took this years matchup 28-20.


The Rough Riders take the Big R Trophy back to Kent!


QB Jack Smith was stellar for Roosevelt completing 19 of 29 passes for 350 yards and 3 touchdowns. Lincoln Wade, Jaiden Portis and Theodore Maccarone each had a touchdown reception for the Rough Riders.


Daniel Sanders had a nice game running the ball for Ravenna with 134 yards on 11 carries and 3 touchdowns.


Kent will have their home opener next Friday vs CVCA while Ravenna travels to Mogadore.
