Big plays prove costly for Golden Flashes as they fall to the Red Hawks 23-3

Kent OH- Dix Stadium on the campus of Kent State University saw the 3-1 Miami of Ohio Red Hawks came in to face host 1-3 Kent State Golden Flashes in a clash of the MAC.

QB Brett Gabbert and the Red Hawks saw first possession. But a short drive as the Golden Flashes defense forced a 3 & out. This meaning that QB Mike Alaimo and the Kent State offense would get a shot to take the lead. Alaimo would found Christain McCray for gains of 32 and 11 on the drive. That setup a Andrew Glass 28-yard field goal to take the lead.

Both teams would exchange punts. As the Flashes went to punt, they pulled out a fake but were unable to pick up the first. As the Red Hawks held possession down by 3 at the Kent 22 they looked to tie. The Flashes defense bends, but does not break as they force a 40-yard Graham Nicholson attempt.

Another Flashes punt set up a touchdown drive for Miami of Ohio. Miles Marshall and Kenny Tracey both on the receiving end of 12 yard passes from Gabbert. The next Gabbert pass was to Cade McDonald, who goes 32 yards to pay dirt for the score. Nicholson connects on the extra-point to give the Red Hawks a 10-3 lead.

Kent State was forced to punt again to open the 2nd quarter, and a big chunk play of 49 yards on a Gabbert to Joe Wilkins JR. Macyo Williams came up with a Flashes sack, setting up a 40-yard kick for Nicholson that split the uprights. With the score sitting at 13-3, we'd head into halftime as Kent would begin the 2nd half with possession

The Flashes first possession concludes in a punt. A number of big plays for the Red Hawks set up another Nicholson field goal. Rashod Amos ripped off a 24 yard run, as Cade McDonald and Joe Wilkins Jr. both picked up 12 yards on catches from Brett Gabbert. Graham Nicholson drilled his 3rd field-goal of the game, this one from 24 yards out to make it a 16-3 lead for Miami of Ohio.

The Golden Flashes punted again, as Miami of Ohio continued to utilize that to their advantage. Wilkins Jr. picked up 48 yards on a reception. McDonald picked up 14 to set Amos up at the goal line. Rashod Amos took the handoff, bursting to the right for the score.

Kent ran the clock out on the 3rd quarter as they trailed 23-3.

Both early 4th quarter possessions ended in punts. Two Jameel Gardner catches went for a combined 27 yards, but Alamio was sacked for a total of 4 times on the drive forcing a punt. Miami of Ohio began from their own 33. Kent makes a 3rd down stand on the Red Hawk 48. With the ball at their own 16, the Flashes gain only 6 yards between 4 plays as they turn it over on downs. The Red Hawks would kneel out the clock to pick up their 4th consecutive win by a final of 23-3 over the Kent State Golden Flashes.
