Captains Win 4-2 As Bibee Shuts Down Lugnuts

Updated: Aug 7, 2022

Eastlake, OH- The Lake County Captains (36-33) took on the Lansing Lugnuts (25-44) at Classic Park. This is the first homestand for the Captains without the power hitting Jhonkensy Noel who was promoted to Double A Akron last week. The Captains had red hot Tanner Bibee (1-1, 2.83 ERA) taking the mound, while Lansing had Jake Walkinshaw (0-0, 1.93 ERA) getting the start. It was a pitching duel until the bottom of the 4th inning when Lansing LHP Mac Lardner (2-1, 4.55 ERA) relieved Jake Walkinshaw who gave up no runs and had 3 strike outs in 3.0 innings. Lardner started the inning by walking Captains 1B Joe Naranjo. RF Alexfri Planez, who has been on a tear over the last few series ripped double to right leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd for CF Petey Halpin who was hitting clean up. Halpin drove a ball just fair to right and the ball became stuck under the wall. Lansing's RF Lawrence Butler put his hands up to indicate that he couldn't reach the ball. After the umpire went up to inspect, he ruled the ball was playable and Halpin had himself a 3-run inside the park home run. After two strike outs, 3B Gabriel Rodriguez hit his 6th home run of the year over the left field wall. A solo shot giving the Captains a 4-0 lead. Tanner Bibee pitched 5.0 innings for the Captains giving up 5 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 7. Davis Sharpe (0-0, 1.80 ERA) came in to help the Captains keep the Lugnuts at bay in the top of the 6th. Unfortunately the second batter he faced was Lansing C Tyler Soderstrom, one of the top prospects in the Oakland Athletics farm system. Soderstrom launched a shot off the advertisement board in right for a solo home run, his 12th of the season, and cutting the lead 4-1. Lansing had runners on the corners in the top of the 7th when a shallow fly ball was hit by RF Lawrence Butler, Captains LF Johnathon Rodriguez caught the ball and then threw a absolute wild throw no where near home and allowed Lansing's 2B Euribiel Angeles to score, cutting further into the lead 4-2. Jordan Jones (2-1, 6.00 ERA) took over for Sharpe in the top of the 8th for the Captains and never looked back shutting the door in both the 8th and 9th innings on the Lugnuts and getting the Captains a much deserved victory. After the game we got some thoughts from Coach Dicenzo on Petey Halpins home run, the great defense played, and a injury that occurred to 3B Gabriel Rodriguez. The Captains advanced to 37-33 on the season, while dropping Lansing to 25-45. RHP Aaron Davenport (2-4, 3.45 ERA) takes the mound for the Captains on Wednesday, while opposite him will be Stevie Emanuels (3-7, 5.06 ERA) for the Lansing Lugnuts. The game will again be at Classic Park with a 7:00 PM start time. Players of The Game Lake County Captains- CF Petey Halpin: 1-4 HR 3 RBI 1 Run P Tanner Bibee: 5.0 IP 5 H 1 BB 5 K Lansing Lugnuts-
