Mantua OH- On a rainy evening in Northeast Ohio, inside Crestwood High School the Red Devils hosted a volleyball match against the 1-1 Mogadore Wildcats who were coming fresh off a loss to Garfield.
Crestwood would serve first but a serve that fell short by Audrey Fusci gave Mogadore a quick and easy 1-0 advantage. An early combined block from Kayleigh Helm and Maddie Dustman set the tone early defensively by the Red Devils.
Potentially play of the night comes off a dig from Fusci and dynamite hit from Helm that barely drops fair to bump Crestwoods lead up to 5, 14-9.
From that point on Crestwood went on a 9-5 run to close the door on Mogadore in set one, capped off by Hannah Wards tip; 25-14 the final in set one. Mogadore would come out quickly in set two, a kill from Sophia Moledor to build some early momentum. The Crestwood front row dominated with three blocks on Mogadore hits.
The Red Devils on the high side up 9-6. Crestwoods lead had blown up to 17-9, but Mogadore answered with a 6-2 run to cut their 8 point deficit in half. With the set tied at 21 a piece, Crestwood's quick 4-0 run sealed the Wildcats fate in set 2. Despite falling behind 1-0 to start the third set, Mogadore quickly used a 11-5 spurt to lead by 5 at 11-6. This run was deeply aided by a number of Crestwood errors between a serve falling short again and hits flying out of play abruptly had the Red Devils staring at a 6-point deficit.
A rapid turn around and Crestwood jumped back into it and eventually took the lead at 15-14, forcing a Mogadore timeout. Hannah Wards spectacular night continued with a spike that fueled the fire, putting the Red Devils up 3.
In a fitting end Maddie Dustman capped of a ecstatic night at the home of the Red Devils with a tip to end it at 25-20. Crestwood wins the day between JV and Varsity, both dusting off the brooms for their first sweeps of the season.
