Gates Mills – It was a sunny Friday evening at Gilmour Academy as the Villa Angela-St. Joseph Vikings took on the John Hay Hornets.
Villa Angela was able to start the season out with a dominating win as they used their run game to control the outing.
The Vikings came out the gate swinging as Kevin Steuball completed a 30 yard pass to Christian Chase to open up the game.
Villa Angela would continue to use the run marvelously to dominate the ball in the 1st quarter to get the offense going.
The Vikings had 3 rushing touchdowns in the quarter with all of them coming from four-star division one prospect Bo Jackson.
I asked coach Rotsky about his running back Bo Jackson,
“I think he’s the best player in the state of Ohio.”
The defense made their presence felt as well, as Chase was able to catch an interception
before the quarter would end with Villa Angela up 20-0.
I asked senior linebacker Eric Elder about the preparation on the defensive side of the ball leading into tonight,
“The past 2 months we’ve been all over their film we knew every move they were doing.”
The Vikings came out and dominated the second half just as they did the first. Powell opened the half with another rushing touchdown, capitalizing on John Hay’s previous penalties.
John Hay continued to struggle offensively with several empty drives and Villa Angela would take advantage with a string of exciting touchdown plays.
One of them being a 40-yard touchdown pass from Bo Jackson to Christian Chase.
The Hornets were able to get on the board before the quarter ended with a 13 yard jet sweep.
That along with a fourth quarter touchdown pass from Noah Nutty would be the only times that John Hay saw the endzone.
Villa Angela would win 40-14. Coach Jeff Rotsky had this to say about the win,
“We’ve been revving it up and now we finally got a chance to let it go… Overall it was a pretty good first outing.”
The Vikings will take the field again August 25th at 7 PM in YSU Stambaugh Stadium while John Hay travels to Cleveland Central Catholic.
I spoke with Bo Jackson, Amani Powell, Eric Elder & coach Jeff Rotsky.
